Transmission by ingestion

Some pathogens like Hepatozoon spp. are transmitted by ticks, but only when the hosts of the ticks eat them. In the case of Hepatozoon canis and the vector Rhicephalus sanguineus, the ticks are eaten during grooming (Shaw et al., 2001).
