Serological tests are often described by those using them as good, accurate, useful, unreliable, difficult to perform, etc. These loose descriptions indicate that there are differences in the accuracy and usefulness of different tests that require accurate definition and quantitation. In this chapter the essential terms used to describe test performance and the measurement of the necessary parameters are discussed.
The following topics will be covered in this sub-module:
- Sensitivity
- Specificity
- Determination of D-SN and D-SP
- Specificity and Sensitivity requirements for a test
- Predictive value (PV) of a test
- Comparing two tests
- Precision
- Reproducibility
- Validity and validation of test methods
