Babesiosis is one of the most important tick-borne diseases causing economic losses in cattle-production systems world-wide, especially in tropical and subtropical regions, where it is caused by both Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis. In Northern Europe, bovine babesiosis is caused by Babesia divergens. In cattle, the parasites only occur in erythrocytes, and haemolysis is the primary mechanism leading to the development of clinical signs.
