2nd newsletter of the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory

Following the interest in our first newsletter in August we have decided to produce a second one. November is usually the time of the year when the VGL, similar to other entities, focuses on finalising current projects and plans for the next year. Throughout the year, the laboratory has received a number of requests about the value of the DNA certificate and the DNA profile, parentage testing, colour variant testing in wildlife, sample collection for DNA profiling and individual animal identification and traceability systems and how this all relates to improving breeding of these animals.

Introductory Course in Animal Ethics

 

The Animal Ethics Committee of the University of Pretoria invites you to participate to an introductory course in animal ethics.

Aim: The course is designed to give researchers, new to animal research, some insights into the ethical design and management of animal research projects within a South African Regulatory Framework. The course will be presented by UP staff, including the chairman of the Animal Ethics Committee. Please note that this course will, not any practical animal handling experience.

Utrecht University academics visit the Faculty of Veterinary Science

Utrecht University academics’ visit to the Faculty of Veterinary Science will impact very positively on its future teaching and learning activities.

Prof Peter van Beukelen and Dr Harold Bok visited the Faculty of Veterinary Science’s Onderstepoort Campus from 16 to 18 March 2015. Against the background of the very effective existing MOU with the Utrecht University this visit not only reinforced the close ties between the two institutions but also explored even closer collaboration in educational research.

New DVD on African horse sickness released

An informative, professionally produced DVD on African horse sickness is now available from the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria.  

African horse sickness (AHS) is the most feared disease of horses on the African continent, and claims the lives of more than 200 horses in South Africa each year.

Dr Erick Kandiwa and Mr Salome P. Nghinamito (BVMIII student 2018) of the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Namibia, have created this resource.
